Family & Community Ceremonies

“The more you praise and CELEBRATE your life, the more there is in life to CELEBRATE!”

   – Oprah Winfrey

Baby blessings, child naming, welcoming ceremonies for blending & extending families, entrustment ceremonies, coming-of-age celebrations, birthdays, family reunions and wedding anniversaries.

Family life is abundant life; there’s rarely a dull moment. And so much to celebrate! Love for our families inspires endless possibilities for ceremony…

Welcoming ceremonies for new family members, whether by birth, adoption or marriage, have existed in virtually every culture. Publicly marking the entry of new members into our families is a joyous celebration to create together. Giving voice to our commitment to guide a child through life is powerful and enduring.

Families who regularly include ceremony in their busy lives are the stronger for it, even simple blessings at mealtime, creating a birthday nature table or preparing a farewell ritual for a beloved family pet.

Family ceremonies are especially close to my heart, as they nourish our children now, and the generations to come. Through family ceremonies, children learn that deep comfort and joy can come from sacred time.

Abegael had been a family friend for many years, so it only felt right to have her lead our 8 month old sons blessing ceremony. Abegael was a delight to work with. She had so many ideas and a beautiful sense of what could make the most memorable and heart warming ceremony, including blending a seamless ritual of our mothers’ lighting our own (carefully kept) baptismal candles with our lighting our son’s blessing candle for the first time. It was a wonderful way to officially welcome our son into the world. The day was everything we wanted it to be and more. Thank you Abegael for giving us a one-of-a-kind ceremony that we will never forget.

E & BS, West Vancouver, Baby Blessing

Thank you so much for everything. We enjoyed the ceremony and the sweet basket of gifts you presented to us…the pair of beeswax candles, the honey, the rose petals, and the crimson handfasting ribbon. We will cherish the beautiful keepsake copy of our Renewal of Vows forever. You are such an amazing person and we thank you!

S &A McK, Seattle, Washington, Renewal of Vows

With her calm approach, Abegael skilfully guided the unfolding of a ritual. Her gentle voice and soft singing enabled the participants to deepen their awareness. She created an atmosphere which encouraged trust and sharing. Abegael is a gifted specialist in ritual, remembrance and reliving.

M Gavan, Director Vancouver Storytelling Cric? Crac!, Community Ritual

Abegael, I just can’t begin to tell you how grateful and happy I am about the gathering you facilitated for my birthday. It was everything I hoped for and so much more. Passing the pomegranate as a talking stone was brilliant. My friends are still talking about it!

B Mathias, North Vancouver, Women’s Circle

Our event exceeded my expectations, particularly regarding the level of comfort and ease I felt during the ceremony. I appreciated the consideration of our needs and wants, and the creation of a ceremony to reflect these. All of the pieces continued working long after the ceremony. It became more about the memorable journey than about an end-point in time. Thank you. This ceremony marked a time in our lives that we will remember fondly.

Ms. Fisher-Lang, with her deep understanding of the human soul, brought a new dimension to my partner’s birthday celebration: a ritual that allowed every invited guest to honour and bless him in ways that he had never experienced before. He was so moved; we all were!

LN, West Vancouve, 50th Birthday Ritual

What a marvelous job you did at Martin’s birthday celebration, Abegael. You are truly gifted my dear. The whole event was a fabulous surprise for him. Thanks very much for all you do for our wonderful community!

House & Home Blessing Ceremonies

“Home is where your story begins.”

   – Annie Danielson

Rituals to help us to say goodbye to a beloved home, or to ensoul a new one – in a house blessing, smudging can cleanse the space and open it to new possibilities. Sage for healing prosperity, rosemary for clarity, cedar for purifying, and lavender for balance.

We can see our house as a structure, or recognize it as a place of heart and soul. How many ways are our lives supported by our home, whether we have lived there for decades or are starting anew?

One of the things that makes a house a home, that transforms it from walls and pipes and wiring, is the inclusion of family and friends.

It is in the shelter of one another that people live. – Irish Proverb

Leaving a house can be traumatic, especially after many years. Telling the story of the house can be important in the farewell process.

Perhaps moving out of a place we have lived in for a long time into a new, different place is like listening to a different piece of music. We’re not sure if we will warm to it. It has a different melody and tempo; we’re used to classical and maybe it’s jazz.

We tend to carry our house with us, emotionally, on our back, like a giant snail. Perhaps it’s the idea of home, or our longing for the perfect one. Or just a matter of destiny. As described here by the Irish poet John O’Donohue.

Your soul knows the geography of your destiny. Your soul alone has the map of your future, therefore you can trust this indirect, oblique side of yourself. If you do, it will take you where you need to go, but more important, it will teach you a kindness of rhythm in your journey.  – John O’Donohue / Anam Cara: A Book of Celtic Wisdom.

Sometimes an elderly person resists moving out of their longtime home into a seniors’ residence, then is surprised by a renewed feeling for life, engaged in a lively community environment and no longer alone.

Abegael, I was very touched by our experience of being together—by the connection, the openness, the depth of emotion, the sacredness of what we created together. I appreciated the form that you provided, combined with the flexibility to take the ceremony in whatever direction it wanted to go. I thank you, my friend, for what you did to make our leavetaking ceremony so special and memorable.

On Moving
We toast to new things and to glorious change.
To change ourselves and to change our world.
To know the need for it.
To deal with the pain of it.
To feel the joy of it.
To undertake the journey without
understanding the destination.
The art of gentle revolution.

   – Michael Leunig

Healing Ceremonies

“Let us remember that within us is a palace of immense magnificence.”

   – Teresa of Avila

In the chaos of an unexpected and big life change, gathering for an hour of peace to speak from the heart may be powerfully transformative.

Can ceremony be healing? Yes. In my experience, absolutely and emphatically, yes.

Often, a ceremony may be the only thing which can ease us from the grip of a shocking soul experience and help to transform our shattered sense of self.

A ceremony can support us as we work to let go of what is painful or what is passing, and to cultivate gratitude, acceptance and even celebration.

Ceremonies of Healing may support:

  • Closure of a business, experience, community event
  • Aging
  • Divorce
  • Losing a job or a home
  • Health changes
  • Empathy rituals with those in great pain
  • An experience of woundedness

Squamish elder and storykeeper Wendy Charbonneau collaborates with Life Threads, offering traditional praise songs and blessing rituals.

Your CEREMONY for Midlife: Celebrating our Wisdom last night was a wonderful, healing gathering. Even in just talking about the kind of ceremonies we might like was clarifying for the kind of comfort and recognition my heart was longing for. I could see that the same was the case for many others. Thank you so much! You have a touch for fostering gentle deepness. Thank you.
